Amid the demand being raised from various quarters on the need for a strict land law in the State, the Uttarakhand BJP has said that its government is committed to a strong land law in Uttarakhand. The president of Uttarakhand BJP Mahendra Bhatt said on Wednesday that the State government has so far freed more than 3000 acres of land in the State from the clutches of the mafia and has taken decisions such as ten years of imprisonment for those engaged in illegal encroachments.

He said the Pushkar Singh Dhami government believes in action rather than words. Giving his support for the strict land law, Bhatt said that the State government is studying all technical aspects in this regard. The government has received the report of the Subhash Kumar committee on Land laws and a cabinet subcommittee has been set up by the government on it.

The statement of Bhatt came hours after a massive protest was organised by different organisations in provisional state capital Dehradun on Wednesday. Many organisations and Statehood activists took part in the protest march to the residence of the chief minister. The protesters demanded that a strict land law on the lines of Himachal Pradesh should be implemented in Uttarakhand.
