BJP leads in big cities, independents perform better in various local bodies

The counting of votes polled in the elections for 100 urban local bodies continued till late in the evening on Saturday though Bharatiya Janata Party mayoral candidates were leading comfortably in most of the municipal corporations. The final results are expected late at night. According to the results released by the State Election Commission (SEC) till the time of this report being filed, while the BJP performed well in large cities, independent candidates and Congress candidates performed well in smaller towns and mountainous areas.
According to the SEC, among the municipal corporations, the BJP candidates were leading in six, Congress in one and an independent candidate in one. Out of the 46 posts of municipal council chairpersons, independents won seven and were leading in three, the BJP won 12 and was leading in three and the Congress won nine and was leading in four. Out of the 43 posts of Nagar Panchayat chairperson, independents won 11, the BJP won 14 and was leading in one while the Congress won 11 and was leading in three. Out of the 540 seats of councillors in municipal corporations, the BJP had won in 33 and was leading in 109, independents had won in 43 and were leading in 49 while the Congress had won four and was leading in 52. Similarly, out of 444 seats for members of municipal councils, independents won 199 and were leading in 27, BJP won 86 and was leading in 13 while the Congress won 30 and was leading in 11. Out of the 298 seats for Nagar Panchayat members, independents won 122 and were leading in 26, BJP won 60 and was leading in five while the Congress won 28 and was leading in four.
In the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun, BJP mayoral candidate Saurabh Thapliyal was leading, followed by Congress candidate Virendra Singh Pokhriyal. In the Municipal Corporation of Rishikesh, BJP’s Shambhu Paswan was leading with independent candidate Dinesh Chandra in second position. Similarly, independent candidate Arti Bhandari was leading in the Municipal Corporation of Srinagar followed by BJP’s Asha Upadhyay while the BJP’s Ajay Verma was leading in the Municipal Corporation of Almora followed by the Congress’ Bhairav Goswami. In the Municipal Corporation of Haldwani-Kathgodam, Congress’ Lalit Joshi was leading, followed by BJP’s Gajraj Singh Bisht while in the Municipal Corporation of Haridwar, the BJP’s Kiran Jaisal was ahead of Congress’ Amresh Devi Baliyan. BJP’s Deepak Bali was leading in the Municipal Corporation of Kashipur followed by Congress’ Sandeep Sahgal while in the Municipal Corporation of Rudrapur too the BJP’s Vikas Sharma was leading, followed by Congress’ Mohan Lal Kheda.
