The Bharatiya Janata Party released its lists of mayoral candidates on Sunday for the ensuing Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) elections in Uttarakhand. The party has dropped the previous Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ and fielded Saurabh Thapliyal instead. The party has fielded Shambhu Paswan in Rishikesh (SC), Anita Devi Agrawal in Roorkee (Woman), Gajraj Singh Bisht in Haldwani (unreserved) and Deepak Bali in Kashipur (unreserved). Along with these candidtes, the party also announced its mayoral candidates in six municipal corporations including Haridwar, Srinagar, Kotdwar, Pithoragarh, Almora and Rudrapur.
According to the list, Kiran Jaisal has been nominated as the mayoral candidate from Haridwar under the OBC women’s category. Shailendra Rawat will represent the BJP from Kotdwar, a general category seat, while Kalpana Dewal has been fielded from Pithoragarh, designated for women candidates. Ajay Verma has been chosen for Almora under the OBC category and Vikas Sharma has secured the party’s ticket from Rudrapur, a general category seat. Besides this, the BJP has nominated Asha Upadhyay as its mayoral candidate from Srinagar. Upadhyay’s selection has drawn attention as she joined the party just two days before the announcement.
Apart from this, the BJP State media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan informed that the party will not field its own candidate in the Landhaura Nagar Panchayat but will extend support to its ally’s nominee. Chauhan emphasised that this decision aligns with the party’s broader strategy to strengthen its alliance and secure victory through cooperation.
