Welcoming the submission of the draft regulations of the Uniform Civil Code by the regulations and implementation committee to chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Bharatiya Janata Party has stated that there is considerable enthusiasm in the public for the UCC in the interests of the State. The BJP State president Mahendra Bhatt said that one more promise made in the party’s election manifesto is about to be fulfilled, adding that among other aspects, this law will provide a safety shield to women in the State.

Bhatt said that all the provisions in the draft have been kept in accordance with the constitution of India and have been given final shape after detailed study. The UCC accords uniform rights to all citizens and ends discrimination on the basis of religion and caste. It will have uniform provisions for all in cases related to marriage, divorce, inheritance and property dispute, he said while adding that the UCC is needed in the nation to end religious and caste-based discrimination. “This step has been taken to ensure that all the people receive uniform justice in Uttarakhand while considering the empowerment and safety of women. The bill will soon be implemented on the ground.  Uttarakhand will become the first State after Independence to implement the UCC, which will also motivate other States to do the same,” he said.

Responding to the Congress’ reaction to the UCC, Bhatt said that it is influenced by a negative attitude and an anti-development mentality. “The Congress has been raising objections to the UCC since the beginning. It has a problem even with a law being made to ensure uniform rights to all citizens in the State. The Congress has been pursuing its agenda by projecting the UCC as a conspiracy against the Muslim community,” the BJP State president added.
