The clean sweep by the ruling BJP in Lok Sabha elections in Uttarakhand has enhanced the stature of the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the national politics and within the BJP. The victory of BJP in all the five seats in the State assumes importance considering the fact that BJP performed badly in many of the States where it is in office including neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. Like in other parts of the country, the election in the State was also fought on the face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However CM Dhami was at the forefront of the election campaign in Uttarakhand. Before the declaration of the election and imposition of the model code of conduct (MCC) he had traversed various parts of the State. After the imposition of the MCC, the CM addressed more than 100 public meetings and road shows in all parts of the State in support of the BJP candidates.
Political observers point out that apart from the appeal of PM Modi, the decisions of the Dhami government also helped in garnering votes for the BJP candidates. The decision of the Dhami government to implement Uniform Civil Code ( UCC) in the State also elicited appreciation in various parts of the country. Similarly, the action against the land jihad in the State and anti-riot act also earned him popularity in a section of the society in the State. The action on the copying mafia and enactment of a stringent act to end the menace of cheating in competitive examinations were also appreciated by the people of the State and the victory of all the five candidates of BJP reflects the new found popularity of the CM. Political observers opine that Dhami understood the pulse of the electorate in Uttarakhand and is fast emerging as a popular leader of BJP in the country.
