The bodies of the four mountaineers of the naval expedition which was hit by an avalanche on Mount Trishul on Friday were sent by special aircraft to naval headquarters on Sunday. Their bodies will be sent to their native places from the naval headquarters, officials informed.
It will be recalled that the bodies of four out of the six members of the naval expedition to Mount Trishul were retrieved on Saturday, a day after the six went missing following an avalanche. The four bodies were brought by an army helicopter to Joshimath on Sunday. Doctors at the community health centre here conducted their post mortem after which the bodies were handed back to the army. The bodies were then taken by a special aircraft of the Indian Air Force to the naval headquarters. Meanwhile, search operations have continued to trace the one naval personnel and a Sherpa missing since the avalanche.
It is pertinent to mention here that a 20-member team of the Indian Navy was on an expedition to the 7,120 metres high Mount Trishul. On Friday, a 10-member group began the ascent but was caught in an avalanche at a height of 6,700 metres. Five climbers and one Sherpa had gone missing after the avalanche which took place early morning at about 5 AM.
