The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has started work on the Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway in Joshimath after cracks surfaced on the road recently due to land subsidence being experienced in the Joshimath area. Work on the patches where the highway has subsided is also being started by the BRO. It will be recalled that the pilgrimage to Badrinath will open with the reopening of its portals on April 27.
Work on repairing the highway has been started to ensure that the pilgrims do not face any inconvenience during the pilgrimage. In addition to the pilgrimage, this national highway is also important from the strategic point of view. The Chamoli sub divisional magistrate Kumkum Joshi said that work on patches of the highway affected by subsidence has been started. Construction of drains along the road and filling the holes is also being undertaken, she added.
