A 75-year-old woman was allegedly robbed of her gold chain in broad daylight in Dehradun’s Vasant Vihar area, raising questions over police security arrangements during the Independence Day period. The incident took place on August 14 and was captured on CCTV.
The incident happened in Vasant Vihar Phase-2. Vikas Mittal, the woman’s son, lodged a complaint in Vasant Vihar police station. Based on his complaint, police have registered an FIR and started an investigation. According to the complaint, Raj Rani Mittal was walking outside her house at around 4:45 PM. A man riding a scooty approached her and stopped her on the pretext of asking for directions. The man spoke to her for a few moments before snatching the gold chain from her neck. He then pushed the woman and fled from the spot. The woman lost her balance and fell on the road.
CCTV footage shows that the accused was riding a scooty without a number plate. The footage has been obtained by the police and may help in identifying the accused. The incident has also raised concerns among local residents about security in the city. One elderly resident said that such incidents were rarely heard of earlier, but they have been increasing in recent days. Another resident said that the police should increase patrolling in parks and public grounds.
Vasant Vihar police said that an FIR has been registered in the case. On the directions of senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobal, a team has also been formed to identify and arrest the accused.
