Excavations for civic works in various parts of Dehradun are causing major inconvenience to locals and businessmen in the city. Many businessmen in the city have reported considerable losses resulting from the construction works underway in the open drains, particularly during the monsoon season. Further, customers encounter difficulties and unhygienic conditions when entering shops to buy products and services. Moreover, the open drains frequently overflow during rains and vehicles traveling at high speeds splash drain water onto customers and road users, said the businessmen.
Regarding the excavations and construction works local businessman Ajay Mehta said, “I am facing a major loss in my hardware business due to the open drains that are under construction. It has been a month since the construction started and the condition of the drains is appalling. The delay in completion is affecting my sales and leaving me in a lurch. While I understand the importance of the civic works, I urge the government to make sure that the construction is completed on time without any further delay.”
Another businessman Manish Nagpal claimed that the civic works and excavations especially in monsoon has affected his business a lot. Apart from this, he said that open and overflowing drains especially during the rains bring dirty water to the doorsteps of the shops. As a result, the customers who visit the shop are always in a hurry to leave. “The unhygienic surroundings due to the ongoing construction works have affected my business,” he added.
“The excavations and ongoing civic works in the city have impacted the local businessmen as well as the customers a lot. Apart from this, the ongoing construction works especially in monsoon causes traffic jams round-the-clock. Sometimes the open drains lead to accidents,” said advocate Mahindra Arora.
Locals point out that the protracted civic works are exacerbating traffic congestion and pose an accident risk for the road users.
