A 24-year-old man Manish Kumar allegedly raped a woman in his cab on the pretext of giving her a lift to ISBT in Dehradun on May 3. The police claimed to arrest the man within 12 hours of getting the complaint from the victim. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar said in a Press conference here on Friday that a woman filed a written complaint in the Clement Town police station on May 4 stating that she had come to Dehradun from Chandigarh on April 30 to celebrate her friend’s birthday.
“On May 3, her friends dropped her off near Shimla Bypass around 9:30 PM when a cab driver offered her a lift stating he is also going towards ISBT and can drop her there, as per the victim. She got into the cab and when they reached ISBT, she asked him to stop the cab but he threatened her. He closed all the windows, locked the cab from inside and took her to the forest near Asharodi where he allegedly raped her in the cab,” said Kunwar. He said that the victim claimed that the accused again threatened her and then left her there in the forest and took all the money she had in her purse. The victim said she was scared due to which she stayed inside the forest the whole night and then somehow managed to reach ISBT and contacted her friend, said the SSP. He said that a team was formed to search for the accused. He said, “The team analysed nearly 150 CCTV footage of the routes covered by the accused through his cab. Crucial information was also gathered about him through surveillance. The police identified the cab of the accused Manish through the CCTV footage. He was arrested on Friday from his village Khushhalpur in Saharanpur.
The police have also recovered the bag and clothes robbed from the victim.” He said that the accused is a taxi driver who runs taxis mainly on the routes from Dehradun to Saharanpur. He will be soon presented before the court. The SSP has also announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for the investigation team to nab the accused within 12 hours.
