The State secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML) Indresh Maikhuri has said that all the contracts given to Navayuga Engineering Company Limited in Uttarakhand should be cancelled. He said that the company responsible for the tunnel mishap in Silkyara due to which the lives of 41 labourers are in danger is infamous for such incidents. Maikhuri said that the contract of the phase III of the Nagpur- Mumbai Samridhi expressway has been given to this company. In August this year, a big girder launching machine of the company collapsed due to which deaths of 20 labourers occurred. The police have registered a case under section 304 of IPC (culpable homicide) against the company. He said that the Union government was aware of the accident but even then the works of the company were not monitored. The CPI-ML leader said that the Navayuga Engineering Company Limited is also involved in construction of the Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail line project and it appears that the government is waiting for an accident here also.
He said that apart from cancelling all the contracts awarded to the company, the government should undertake a safety audit of the works done so far by the company. Maikhuri added that the cost of the rescue operation currently underway in Silkyara should be recovered from this company and a case of criminal negligence for putting the lives of the labourers in jeopardy should be registered against it.
