Congress leader Abhinav Thapar said that the Excise department tender for 150 crore holograms of non-biodegradable should be cancelled due to their harmful impact on the environment. Addressing the media, he informed that the Excise department had issued a tender for holograms to be used on liquor bottles on December 20, with a requirement for holograms made of 36-micron polyester plastic. However, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) issued guidelines that banned single-use plastic (SUP) below 100 microns. Citing this, he raised the issue with the chief minister, Excise department and the Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board while also writing to the Prime Minister’s office. He further demanded that the CM should step in and the tender of the Excise department should be cancelled to prevent irreparable damage to the environment of Uttarakhand. Such holograms also pose a serious threat to the state’s wildlife, rivers, lakes, glaciers and other environmental resources, Thapar added.
