Candidates galore in Congress for coveted post of Doon mayor

Even though the Congress has suffered a series of electoral losses in Uttarakhand in the parliamentary, Assembly and urban local bodies elections in Uttarakhand in recent years there is no dearth of claimants for the party ticket in the ensuing elections of ULBs in the State. The grand old party is suffering from the problem of plenty in selecting its candidate for the prestigious position of Dehradun mayor. There are at least a dozen serious contenders for the mayoral ticket of Congress party in Dehradun. 

The vice president of State Congress Suryakant Dhasmana who had unsuccessfully contested the mayoral election in the year 2014 has again thrown his hat in the ring for the party’s ticket. The general secretary of State Congress Virendra Pokhriyal has also sought the party’s ticket and so has another general secretary Navin Joshi. The president of Mahanagar Congress Jaswinder Singh Gogi has also expressed his willingness to contest for the post of Mayor. Asha Manorama Dobriyal, the daughter-in-law of the first mayor of Dehradun, Manorama Dobriyal Sharma and the general secretary of State Congress Godavari Thapli have also staked claim for the Congress ticket. Apart from them the president of Congress Sewadal Hema Purohit and Sonia Anand Rawat have also sought the party’s ticket. Former president of Mahanagar Congress Lalchand Sharma, spokesperson of State Congress Abhinav Thapar and former leader of opposition in Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) Neenu Sehgal have also staked claim for the ticket of Congress party for the post of Mayor of the MCD.

It is learnt that the former cabinet minister and a veteran of many electoral battles in undivided Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Hira Singh Bisht has also shown his willingness for the party’s ticket. 

 The vice president (Organisation) Mathuradutt Joshi told The Pioneer that 10 aspirants have officially submitted their claim to contest the post of mayor of Dehradun. He said that the party will start considering these requests after the official schedule of the ULB elections is released.

DEHRADUN :The spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Abhinav Thapar formally staked his claim for Congress ticket on the post of Mayor of DMC on Thursday. He submitted his claim to the president of Mahanagar Congress Jaswinder Singh Gogi. Thapar said that he had initiated the campaign ‘BJP ke 15 Saal, Doon Nagar Nigam Behal’ and raised the issues of the general public. He also claimed that he has exposed many scams and corruption cases in the municipal corporations and expressed confidence that his candidature will be supported by the people of Dehradun.
