Can’t waive off property tax of commercial establishments: Mayor

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) can provide an extension in rebate of depositing property tax but cannot waive off the property tax of commercial establishments. This was stated by Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ on the appeals of restaurants and hotels owners to waive off their property taxes due to poor business during Covid-19 pandemic this financial year. He said that the property tax collection is already low this year due to pandemic which might also affect the development projects of MCD this year. He informed that the corporation has collected about Rs 22 crore only in the last 10 months while the MCD has set the target of collecting around Rs 50 crore by the end of March.

Meanwhile, the municipal tax superintendent, Poonam Rawat informed that around 1,20,000 residential and non-residential properties are registered with the corporation this year out of which, only 35,000 buildings owners have deposited the property tax in MCD. Moreover, the Ramky Company that manages the operation of ISBT and Big Bazaar has also deposited the 50 percent of its property tax which was pending for over three years. The officials informed that the company has deposited around Rs 56 lakh out of the pending property tax of Rs 1.12 crores within the given time period by the corporation and added that Ramky will deposit the remaining tax soon.
