A number of cars were swept away in the Ganga river in Haridwar after a sudden rise in water in a dry river channel where these vehicles were parked on Saturday. The car owners had parked the vehicles in a dry riverbed instead of using the paid parking. According to the police, there was no loss of life.
A day after the advent of monsoon in Uttarakhand, light to moderate rain with heavy spells in some places is being witnessed in various areas in the plains and mountains. According to the police, an intense spell of rain was witnessed in Haridwar on Saturday especially at Mansa Devi and nearby hilly areas. This resulted in a rapid rise in the level of water in the Ganga. In order to avoid paying Rs 100 to Rs 200 to park their vehicles in designated parking spaces, some persons had parked their vehicles on the Sukhi Nadi at Khadkhadi. This river remains dry throughout the year except in the monsoon.
Following an intense spell of rain in the region, these vehicles were carried away by the river in spate to the Ganga. Vehicles floating in the Ganga elicited surprised reactions from the public as some vehicles also reached Har Ki Paidi. While some people went live on social media to capture this scene, others could be seen making reels to capture the scene rarely witnessed here. According to officials, the vehicles were empty so there was no loss of life. The police have appealed to the public to park their vehicles only in the designated parking spaces.
