Case registered against tour operator for overloading vehicle

The Transport department on Monday registered a case against the tour operator allegedly responsible for overloading the vehicle that met with an accident near Raitoli in Rudraprayag on Saturday which killed 15 tourists and left 11 injured. According to the officials, this is likely the first instance where such action was taken against a tour operator by the State authorities for negligence. The assistant divisional transport officer Pramod Karnatki filed a case registered at Rudraprayag police station on Monday. The police registered the case against the Haryana-based tour operator under sections 279, 304 A and 338 of the Indian Penal Code. According to the officials, it is the direct responsibility of the driver and the vehicle owner to ensure that all the rules of the Transport Act are followed and implemented throughout the journey. They should have paid special attention to sensitive aspects including overloading or fitness of the vehicle. The Rudraprayag district magistrate Saurabh Gaharwar also instructed the sub divisional magistrate Ashish Ghildiyal to expedite the magisterial inquiry into the fatal accident. The officials also informed that some of the injured are still getting treatment at AIIMS Rishikesh. Besides this, the injured admitted to the district hospital in Rudraprayag were also discharged by their relatives. The SDM also said that the investigation is underway and will be completed soon.
