CFGD celebrates Earth Day by freeing trees from constricting tree guards

Going beyond academic discussions and formal programmes in rooms, Citizens For Green Doon (CFGD) members chose to celebrate Earth Day by freeing urban trees from tree guards they had outgrown in Dehradun. To protect young tree saplings from harm in the urban scenario, iron tree guards are put around them. The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority, Municipal Corporation of Dehradun and the Forest department put up these tree guards and distribute some to the public as well. Having given protection to the young sapling initially, the tree guards ought to be removed as the tree matures and gains height and girth, CFGD members said.
The members of the group said that once the tree guards are put out they’re often forgotten as nobody’s babies and follow up removal is most unfortunately forgotten. The once very useful tree guard now cuts into the flesh of the growing tree inhibiting its growth. Such trees with metal gouging into their trunks are a common sight in Dehradun city. Pained by such cruel neglect, the CFGD has been celebrating important occasions by freeing grown trees of these tree guards.
In keeping with this trend the group freed 20 trees in Rajendranagar on Monday. Curious residents stepped out of their homes hearing the sound of the generator and cutting machine. Some joined in the celebration and offered tea and water and words of encouragement and appreciation.
