Chamoli disaster toll rises to 62, team to inspect lake on Rishiganga today

With the recovery of one more body in the disaster affected area of Chamoli on Friday, the toll has now increased to 62 while 142 persons are still missing. Of the 61 bodies recovered so far, 34 have been identified while 28 are yet to be identified.

In the tunnel of the Tapovan-Vishnugad power project where 25 to 35 persons were trapped, backflow caused by the debris being in sludge form continued to hamper the search operation. About 145 metres of the tunnel has been cleared of debris with a total of 13 bodies being recovered from it so far.

Meanwhile, Geological Survey of India director and two geologists, two scientists from Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and personnel of the SDRF were taken by an airforce helicopter from Dehradun airport to the disaster affected area. This team will inspect the lake formed on Rishigana river on Saturday.
