Chamoli police arrest three for electrocution tragedy

In latest Uttarakhand news, the Chamoli police arrested three persons in connection with the July 19 mass electrocution tragedy for alleged negligence while operating the electrical equipment at the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Namami Gange project site located on the bank of Alakananda river that led to the deaths of 16 people, including cops. Notably, these are the first arrests made by police in connection with the horrid tragedy. Those arrested are the supervisor of the joint venture company outsourced for operation and maintenance of the Namami Gange STP, a lineman and the additional assistant engineer in charge of the plant for Jal Sansthan. Notably, the matter of gross negligence shown in the operation of the electrical appliances of the plant came to the fore in the preliminary investigation conducted into the tragedy. The police had earlier registered a first information report (FIR) under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Dangerous Machines (Regulation) Act, 1983, against the supervisor of the joint-venture company Pawan Chamola and other unidentified officials.
Speaking of the matter, the superintendent of police Chamoli Parmendra Doval said that more arrests are in the offing. “We are arresting the officials of the companies which were jointly running the plant. We have constituted a team to arrest all those who are responsible for the horrid electrocution tragedy,” he added.
