In response to a public interest litigation regarding illegal mining and instruction of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal conducted inspections of Chandrabhaga River and Triveni ghat on Wednesday. He directed the officials to analyse the footage of CCTVs installed near Chandrabhaga River and Triveni ghat and take action against the illegal mining culprits.
During the inspection, the DM directed officials to retrieve footage from nearby CCTV cameras and asked to take action against people involved if any illegal mining activities are confirmed. Besides this, he also instructed the publication of a public notice to encourage those with evidence such as photos or videos of illegal mining to present them at the office. This will ensure that appropriate action is taken against the offenders in accordance with the law, he said.
Bansal further informed that a significant amount of silt accumulates in the area during the rainy season, prompting the initiation of an auction process to address the issue. In light of public concerns and suggestions, NGT had taken cognisance of the matter and forwarded it to the DM which was the main reason for the inspection of the sites along with officials concerned.
