The Uttarakhand government is working on a plan to reduce the burden of school bags on the shoulders of children. The Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat said this while addressing the inaugural session on a workshop on National Education Policy (NEP) -2020 organised by the Academic Research and Training directorate and State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) on Wednesday. The two-day workshop ended on Thursday.

Rawat said the weight of the school bags of children has increased in the past few years and for their development and growth it is imperative that this burden should be reduced. He said that discussions would be held with officers of all the boards in the State and educationists in this regard. He said that it is seen that students get bored by studies on all the days of the week and sometimes come under stress. To remove this, the Education department is planning to introduce bag free days once in a month. He suggested that on this day, sports, debates, cultural activities and agriculture work can be undertaken.

The minister directed the officers present in the workshop to prepare a curriculum for study of Indian traditional knowledge and compile a book, ‘Hamari Virasat’. He said that they should prepare a plan under which at least 220 days of studies in a year would compulsorily be done. The minister disclosed that an agreement with other boards on Teacher sharing would be done so that the good teachers of other boards can visit schools affiliated by other boards. The School Education secretary Ravinath Raman said workshops on NEP-2020 would also be held in all the districts. He said that NEP-2020 has been implemented in more than 4500 pre primary schools and Anganwadi centres.

Subject experts from different States made their presentations on educational innovations and NEP in the workshop.

Lansdowne MLA Dilip Rawat, director general of School Education Banshidhar Tiwari, director Seema Jaunsari and others were present on the occasion.
