The children’s reading section at the Doon Library and Research Centre (DLRC) has experienced a positive response, with an increased membership of 40 readers within a short period. This new section was established to enhance what the library offers and provide more resources to Dehradun residents, with a specific focus on promoting reading habit among children.
Informing about the response,DLRC librarian JB Goyal said that the children’s section was recently introduced, initially attracting eight members. Currently, there are 40 children registered for annual membership, with 25 of them holding special membership. Membership options for the children’s section include regular and special categories. The regular, typical students are required to pay Rs 100 for annual membership enrollment, while special membership is free for children from NGOs, orphanages, government shelter homes and other organisations. Regarding the services offered in the children’s reading section, he added that 1,500 books were donated at the start of the section by the library administration. Additionally, the library administration reached out to the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation to procure 400 books for the DLRC children’s reading section. To further support and enrich the children, the library also hosts activities such as storytelling and French classes on Fridays and Saturdays, he said.
It is pertinent to mention that earlier the library was only for teenagers, young adults and senior citizens. However, in order to enhance the DLRC decided to open a children’s reading section for kids between the ages of seven and 15 years.
