The Doon Library and Research Centre (DLRC) will establish a children’s reading section on its premises starting in August. Stating this, the librarian at DLRC, JB Goyal said that currently the library is only for teenagers, young adults and senior citizens. However, in order to enhance the library and provide more facilities for the residents of Dehradun, DLRC has decided to open a children’s reading section for kids between the ages of seven and 15 years. The section will be set up and start operating in August within the DLRC premises, he added.
Goyal further stated that the reason for establishing the children’s section is that they have recognised the lack of a special library in Dehradun for young children. Their aim is to enhance children’s reading ability by providing a dedicated space for them to read library books. He further informed that the section will allow 20 to 30 children to read books at one time. In addition to this, there will be a variety of books available for children including general knowledge, novels, special children’s newspapers, history, environment, fiction stories, and many others. He said that currently they have a few books for the children to read, but they have contacted government as well as private agencies for funding to install more books at the library. Further, Goyal emphasised the importance of people donating books for the children at the library. After the donation, DRLC officials will select the donated books to be added to the children’s section. Commenting about the charges for the children to access in reading the books at the section, Goyal stated that an annual membership fee of Rs 100 to Rs 200 will be charged. In addition, a refundable security deposit of Rs 500 will also be taken from the children. Goyal said that the security deposit will be refunded when the children end their library membership
