The popular people’s movement for the cause of environment known as Chipko movement has been removed from the NCERT books. This movement figured in the books as a chapter under UP hills. Chipko movement gained momentum in the 1970s in Chamoli district of undivided Uttar Pradesh. It was about the villagers’ protest against cutting tress as the forest department had given contract to a contractor’s company to chop a large number of tress. The decision to remove this emotive people’s movement from NCERT books will not go down well with the people’s sentiment in Uttarakhand.
