Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep grief over the tragic death of at least 30 pilgrims in a pre-dawn stampede at Prayagraj Mahakumbh on Wednesday. As per reports, tens of thousands had gathered to take holy dip in the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya, resulting in the deadly crowd crush and casualties.
While condoling the death and praying for peace for the departed souls, Dhami said that his thoughts were with the bereaved families.
Further, following the CM’s directives, Uttarakhand’s Disaster Management department swung into action, issuing helpline numbers for assistance. Affected devotees from Uttarakhand can contact the following for support: mobile numbers 8218867005, 9058441404; telephone number 0135 2664315 and toll-free number 1070.
The secretary, Disaster Management, Uttarakhand, Vinod Kumar Suman urged the Mahakumbh pilgrims from the State to reach out to these helplines for help and information if they are in any way affected by the stampede.
The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of lives at Mahakumbh. In the same breath, he slammed the Uttar Pradesh government for its mismanagement of the mammoth crowd. “This tragedy could have been averted had the State government made proper crowd control planning. Prioritising the VVIP movement at the expense of the common pilgrims is highly condemnable,” the Congress leader said.
