The festival is celebrated on 11th day of Deepawali
In a move aimed at respecting the religious sentiments of the people of the mountainous areas of Uttarakhand, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has declared a government holiday on the occasion of the Igas- Bagwal. This festival is celebrated on the 11th day of Deepawali festival. The CM had declared holiday on Igas- Bagwal for the first time last year. Dhami said that this festival holds a special place for the people of Uttarakhand and is the symbol of the State’s folk culture. He said that it should be the State’s endeavour to keep its cultural heritage and traditions alive. The objective is to ensure that the new generation should remain connected with its culture and traditional festivals, he said.
The CM took to Twitter to declare holiday on the occasion of Igas Bagwal using the local dialect. It is pertinent to mention here that the demand for declaring a public holiday on this important festival of Uttarakhand had picked up especially some years ago after the State government had declared a public holiday on the festival of Chhath celebrated mainly by natives of Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh though no such holiday had been declared on the State’s own festival.
