Taking cognisance of a long standing demand of the locals, the chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat has granted approval for widening of the Nandprayag-Ghat motor road. The department concerned has also been issued necessary instructions in this regard. The locals had been staging protest for a considerable time in support of this demand which has been met by Rawat, one of the important decisions taken by him since assuming charge as the chief minister.
It is pertinent to mention here that residents of about 70 villages in the Ghat area near Nandprayag in Chamoli district have been protesting for quite some time now demanding that the motor road be widened to one and a half lane. The interests of thousands of locals are linked to this motor road. Regarding the demand of the locals for the road widening, the local MLA Munni Devi Shah met the chief minister and informed him about the ground reality. She informed the CM that the locals had to experience major difficulties since the road was only one lane wide. The risk of road accidents is also consistent due to the narrowness of the motor road. Citing these factors, she said the demand of the locals was justified.
Taking cognisance of the problem being faced by the locals, the CM has directed measures to resolve the same. Rawat announced that the motor road between Nandprayag and Ghat bazaar in the Tharali assembly constituency will be widened to one and a half lane. Finance and planning along with Public Works Department have been directed to do the needful. Stating that the public is most important for him, the CM said that the state government will do what the public wishes and that which is in the interest of the public.
It will be recalled that locals demanding widening of this road had also marched towards the Vidhan Sabha in Gairsain during the budget session in March.
