In latest news from Doon, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami paid floral tributes to the social activist and freedom fighter Sri Dev Suman on his death anniversary. Calling him an embodiment of service and sacrifice at the altar of the nation, he said that his martyrdom is a perennial inspiration for the people of Uttarakhand.

Sri Dev Suman, a staunch Gandhian wedded to non-violence, fought for the freedom of the erstwhile Princely State Tehri Garhwal from the clutches of the despotic monarchy. Declared a rebel by the royal administration, he was thrown in prison twice. In his second jail term, he was subjected to inhuman torture by the jail administration. After spending 204 days in prison, he started hunger strike in protest against the grim ill-treatment he was being made to suffer. Although the jail administration applied all means to force-feed him he stuck to his resolution to continue with his hunger strike. He breathed his last on the 84th day of his fast unto death stir on July 25 1944 when he was just 29.
