Dehradun’s chief medical officer Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma will issue a letter to all government and private hospitals in the district after an alleged lapse in patient safety at Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital.
According to recent reports, patient Gaurav Gulati was admitted to the surgery ward for post-operative care after undergoing hernia surgery at the hospital six days ago. When hospital staff prepared to administer an injection to Gulati, he noticed that the vial had expired and refused to take it. People present there recorded a video of the incident, which later went viral on social media.
The incident has raised questions over service standards at the district hospital. Several visitors said such negligence in a government healthcare facility is unacceptable and erodes public trust.
In response to this, Sharma called the incident a matter of concern. He said that the hospital administration has constituted a six-member committee to investigate the said incident. “Action will be ensured as soon as the report is received,” he said.
He added that directions regarding medicine and injection expiry have already been issued to all hospitals. A dedicated portal has also been created where expiry details of medicines are updated. Hospitals are being informed three months before expiry so that medicines can either be used on priority or withdrawn to avoid use after the expiry date.
“Following this incident, once again a letter will soon be sent to both government and private hospitals of the Dehradun district that such negligence should be avoided. The expiry date of medicines must be checked. If any negligence is found, strict action will be taken,” Sharma said.
He further said there is also an internal committee in place for the disposal of expired medicines and injections.
