Cold wave warning issued after light snowfall in parts of State

Various parts of Garhwal region witnessed light snowfall on Sunday night while Nainital and some other areas in Kumaon witnessed the first snowfall of this season on Monday. Light rain was also reported in various parts of the State. The light snowfall covered the mountainous regions in a blanket of white, resulting in a drop in temperature and enthusiastic response from tourists and those involved in tourist related trades. However, the weather is forecast to remain dry across the State on Tuesday though a cold wave warning has also been issued for some districts by the State Meteorological Centre.

The State Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow warning regarding the possibility of cold wave likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Almora, Champawat, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts on Tuesday. Apart from this, dry weather is likely to prevail in all the districts of the State today.

The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a partly to mainly clear sky with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be about 23 degrees Celsius and six degrees Celsius respectively.

Earlier, the weather took a turn on Sunday evening, resulting in snowfall in the higher reaches, especially in the Garhwal region. Snowfall was reported in Badrinath, Hemkund/Lokpal, Bhyundar, Auli, Niti and other high altitude areas in the Chamoli district.Those involved in tourism related trades are enthused by the light snowfall, which is expected to attract tourists from the plains. About three inches of snow was reported in Badrinath while two inches was reported in Auli.

In the Kumaon region, Nainital, Ramgarh, Mukteshwar, Dhanachuli and nearby areas witnessed the first snowfall of this season on Monday. As news of the snowfall spread, tourists from various parts of the country reached Nainital in the evening.
