The transport department has formed a committee consisting of the regional transport officer and traffic police to make guidelines for the operation of e-rickshaws in Dehradun. There are currently over 3,000 e-rickshaws that operate in the district as per the officials. These numbers are continuously increasing with time and they have now started affecting the operation of other means of public transport like auto rickshaws, Vikrams and city buses.
Many public transport operators have also claimed to complain about the unrestrained operation of e-rickshaws to the department several times. Though the department has banned e-rickshaws operation on main roads considering the safety issue of passengers, their operators still manage to operate them. Stating that the department needs proper guidelines to ensure the proper operation of e-rickshaws in Dehradun, the department decided to form a committee in the meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) last week regarding this matter.
The regional transport officer (administration) Sunil Sharma said that the department has formed a committee along with the traffic police to work on making guidelines regarding the operation of e-rickshaws on various routes and how many of these should be allowed to operate in the city. “The team consists of RTO (enforcement) Shailesh Tiwari and superintendent of police (traffic) Akshay Konde. The team will work on all factors regarding the operation of e-rickshaws including on which routes these should be allowed to operate and their timing of operation in the city. It will also work on restricting the number of e-rickshaws in the city,” said Sharma. He said that the department is working on implementing a three-tier plan to connect every corner of Dehradun with main routes via public transport and the committee’s work will help in the efficient execution of the plan.
