A large number of citizens and volunteers from various groups protested on Saturday against the proposed felling of 11,000 trees at Mohand for widening of the Delhi-Dehradun highway. The protesters said that cutting 11,000 trees to decrease the travel time by just 11 minutes is not defensible. If executed, this plan will cause major damage to the environment and wildlife under the pretext of convenience of tourists and other travelers while destroying the very natural beauty for which Dehradun is known. The protesters were seen holding placards saying “Welcome to treeless polluted, trickle stream and garbage hill Dehradun”, “No Greenery, No Votes”, “Dehra-doomed ” “Congratulations you’ve saved 11 minutes by killing 11,000 trees” and other messages.
Members of Aagaas foundation, Been There Doon That, Citizens For Green Doon, Do No Trash, The Earth and Climate Initiative , The Eco Group Dehradun, The Friends of Doon Society, Fridays for Future, IDEAL Foundation, Khushion ki Udaan Charitable Trust, MAD by BTD, Mitti Foundation, Nirogi Bharat Mission Trust and others along with staff and students of Summerhill International School were among those who participated in the protest.
