Congress seeks security audit for all power projects

Congress leaders meet the CM and submit a six point memorandum

The Uttarakhand Congress has demanded that a security audit based on environmental and technical aspects should be conducted on all the commissioned and under construction hydro power projects. The party also opined that a committee comprising of major scientific institutes should be constituted for studying the changes in the nature of the glaciers of the state. This committee should constantly monitor the health of glaciers and analyse the data and be in constant touch with the authorities so that they are prepared to effectively tackle natural disasters. These suggestions were given by a delegation of the leaders of Uttarakhand Congress to the chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat here on Friday. The delegation was led by the general secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and former chief minister Harish Rawat and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Pritam Singh.

The Congress leaders submitted a six point memorandum to the CM on the occasion.  The Congressmen said that the state government should have a security plan for all the hydro power projects so that the agencies effectively tackle the disaster and start rescue operation. In the Reni- Tapovan disaster lack of this plan was clearly visible, the Congress leaders pointed out. The delegation said that the villagers of Reni in Chamoli and Dhapa in Munsyari are demanding immediate displacement and in this context the state government should prepare a plan of displacement of highly sensitive villages to safer places. The Congress leaders said that an all party delegation led by CM should present its case to the Union government. On the climate change, the Congress said that the Union home minister should be requested for preparing a detailed working plan covering all aspects of climate change.

The delegation also demanded that the dependents of the deceased in the tragedy should be provided jobs by NTPC. The Congress leaders also drew the attention of CM on the plight of sugarcane farmers who have not received their dues and demanded that support price of sugarcane should be announced by the state government. Apart from Harish Rawat and Pritam Singh, the delegation also consisted of state vice president Ganesh Godiyal, Jot Singh Bisht, state general secretary Godavari Thapli, Prabhulal Bahuguna and Sushil Rathi.
