Cong constitutes coordination committee in U’khand

Nine member committee has majority of former Chief Minister Harish Rawat supporters

In a clear indication that it is in favour of collective leadership in Uttarakhand for the assembly elections slated in early 2022, the central leadership of Congress party has constituted a nine member coordination committee of the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC). The committee is headed by in charge of Uttarakhand Congress Devendra Yadav and comprises of former chief minister and general secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC), Harish Rawat, PCC president Pritam Singh, leader of opposition (LoP) in Uttarakhand assembly Indira Hridayesh, former PCC president Kishore Upadhyaya, Rajya Sabha MP Pradeep Tamta, Secretary All India Congress Committee (AICC) Qazi Nizamuddin, deputy leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Karan Mahra and former secretary of AICC Prakash Joshi.

The names of the Committee clearly suggest that most of its members barring Pritam Singh, Indira Hridayesh and Kishore Upadhyaya are from Harish Rawat camp. The constitution of the committee comes in the backdrop of a campaign by the followers of Harish Rawat to make him the chief ministerial candidate of the party for the assembly elections of 2022. Rawat himself has stated on many occasions that the party should choose a leader and make him the face of the party. According to him it is necessary to counter the strategy of the BJP to make the elections a Modi Vs Congress affair. He had also stated that he is ready to stand behind any leader the party chooses for the CM candidate. Rawat incidentally has also expressed his intention of not contesting the assembly elections this time.
