Cong, opposition leaders protest against exploitation of women

Wednesday, 24 May 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

In protest against what they claim exploitation of women in the State, a Dharna attended by representatives of opposition parties was organised at Gandhi Park here on Tuesday. Addressing the protest the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, Karan Mahara said that the incidences of crime against the women are increasing in Uttarakhand which is considered to be a peaceful State. Quoting the report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), he said that a rape in every 24 hours is occurring in the State. He said that it is surprising that the government which had given the slogan of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ is adopting a pathetic attitude towards the daughters. Mahara said that the sportswomen who have brought laurels to the country by winning medals are holding protests at Jantar Mantar but the Prime Minister is not ready to give an ear to their grievances. He said that now the general public and the farmers of the country have come forward in support of the daughters sitting at Jantar Mantar and have given a call for Mahapanchayat in New Delhi so that the dumb and deaf government wakes up from its slumber.

“ The daughters have given a call for a Mahapanchayat in Delhi and the wife of Surendra Singh Negi who was beaten up  by a cabinet minister in Rishikesh is holding a Mahapanchayat on May 25. This is New India where the daughters are ready to go to any extent to fight injustice,’’ he said.

The former Chief Minister Harish Rawat said that an atmosphere of fear is being created in the State and country. He exhorted the opposition leaders to launch a Statewide agitation for justice to Ankita Bhandari and against exploitation of women.

The leaders of Uttarakhand Congress and other opposition parties were present on the occasion.
