The issue of mismanagement in the ongoing Char Dham Yatra was raised by the members of the opposition on the second day of the budget session of the Assembly on Wednesday. As soon as the proceedings of the house started, the leader of opposition (LoP) Yashpal Arya presented a notice under rule 310 for discussion on the issue. The speaker Ritu Khanduri however ruled that the issue would be taken up under rule 58.
In the discussions on the issue the LoP Arya said that a total of 152 pilgrims have so far died in the Char Dham Yatra due to the gross mismanagement. He said that when the Yatra started the State government was patting its own back on the arrival of a record number of pilgrims. However, it started putting restrictions on the Yatra within the first week itself. Arya said that the statements of the chief minister, his cabinet colleagues and senior officers were different on the matters of registration and health check-up due to which utter chaos prevailed. The Congress members also took the government to task for the death of 140 horses and mules in Kedarnath. They pointed out that the failure of the State government was so big that the Prime Minister’s office had to seek a report from the State government on the issue. The Congress said that the member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Rajendra Singh came to Rishikesh where he threw light on the discrepancies in the Yatra.
