In latest news from Dehradun, with the rescue operation aimed at extricating the workers stranded since a part of the under-construction tunnel collapsed at Silkyara in Uttarkashi district on Sunday facing incessant hiccups, the State Congress has written to the President, demanding a high-level inquiry into the tunnel collapse incident. The former State minister Mantri Prasad Naithani who is the chairman of the fact-finding committee formed by the State Congress said on his return from the mishap site that the lives of 40 workers are in danger thanks to the sluggish pace of the rescue operation. He said that things are being delayed because the Central and the State rescue agencies have not been working in concord as expected in such emergency situations. Hitting out at the Centre, Naithani said that the quality of the tunnel construction was found to be below- par and added that the executive agency entrusted with the tunnel construction do not have the emergency equipment to ensure the safety of the workers in emergency situations.
