Congress accuses BJP of misusing official machinery in ULB polls
PNS | DEHRADUN
The Congress has alleged conspiracy of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in cancellation of nomination papers of its candidates in the elections of urban local bodies in the State.
The vice president of Uttarakhand Congress Suryakant Dhasmana told media-persons on Thursday that fearing defeat, the BJP is engaging in murder of democracy by using official machinery.
He claimed that the nomination papers of Congress candidate for the post of chairperson in Manglaur municipal council, Mohammad Islam and the party candidate in Nagar Panchayat Herbertpur in Dehradun were cancelled under immense pressure from the BJP. He said that Islam has contested local body elections four times in the past and every time the objections against him were found invalid by the returning officers.
Dhasmana said that similar objections were again raised this time also and under pressure from the BJP leaders his nomination paper was cancelled. He said that Raipur MLA Umesh Sharma Kau crossed limits of decency and constitutional propriety for cancellation of the nomination papers of four incumbent councillors of the Congress party. He said that due to strong protest by the Congress workers Kau failed to succeed in his plan but the RO cancelled papers of Congress candidate from ward number 49 Illiyas Ansari on wrong facts.
Dhasmana said that the BJP should leave the task of candidate selection on people and should refrain from putting undue pressure on the officers for cancelling nomination papers of candidates of Congress party.
