Congress announces five mayoral candidates
PNS | DEHRADUN
The Congress has released its first list of mayoral candidates for five municipal corporations. The Congress State vice president (Organisation and Administration) Mathuradatt Joshi, informed that Deepak Jatav has been fielded for the mayoral post in Rishikesh which is reserved for scheduled caste candidate.
The Congress has fielded Amresh Waliyan for Haridwar (reserved for Other Backward Class woman candidate), Pooja Gupta from Roorkee (reserved for a woman candidate), Mohan Kheda from Rudrapur (general) and Bhairav Goswami from Almora (OBC).
It is pertinent to mention here that till the time of this report being filed, neither the Bharatiya Janata Party nor the Congress had finalised their mayoral candiates for Dehradun and a few other municipal corpoations. The contest is expected to be interesting in Dehradun as the Congress has potential to at least give a tough fight depending on the candidate fielded by the BJP. Even traditional BJP voters are not reportedly not happy with the previous mayor and if sources are to be believed, the party may field him yet again.
The previous mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ has little to show when it comes to works during his tenure. He also faced allegations of nepotism and corruption. On the other hand, the Congress lacks a strong candidate against the BJP.
