The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has appointed Ganesh Godiyal as the senior observer for the Kedarnath assembly by-election. The party has also appointed the newly elected MLA from Badrinath assembly constituency Lakhpat Singh Butola as the observer for Kedarnath. On October 11, the in- charge of the Uttarakhand Congress, Kumari Selja had appointed deputy leader of the Congress legislature party (CLP) Bhuwan Kapri and Virendra Jaati as the observers for the crucial bypoll. However on Tuesday Selja issued a new order suppressing the earlier order and appointed Godiyal as senior observer while Kapri, Jaati and Butola will be the observers.
The new order of the AICC on appointment of Godiyal as senior observer is being viewed as the proof that the party has reposed its faith in him in the crucial battle of Kedarnath by- election. His appointment by the central leadership of the party suppressing its earlier order is also being seen as a factional fight within the Uttarakhand Congress. The observers will now interact with the local leaders and party workers in Kedarnath and submit their report on selection of the Congress party candidate from Kedarnath. The party is also conducting a survey in the constituency for candidate selection. The party high command will declare its candidate after going through the report of the observers and finding the survey.
Former MLA Manoj Rawat, former cabinet minister Harak Singh Rawat and the president of the district Congress committee of Rudraprayag Kunwar Sajwan are contenders for the party ticket in Kedarnath.
