Congress leader Harak Singh Rawat campaigned in Gopeshwar for the Congress candidate Lakhpat Butola in the Badrinath Vidhan Sabha bypoll on Sunday. Stating that the Congress works in the interests of all sections of society, he said that the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and former MLA Rajendra Singh Bhandari had left the Congress for selfish gains. Interacting with the public, Rawat said, “Bhandari had to lose his membership of the Vidhan Sabha by defecting to the BJP and also broke the trust of the constituency’s people. The unemployment in Uttarakhand is at its peak under the BJP government while price rise has also continued to cause problems to the people. Crimes against women are also rising consistently.”
Pratapnagar MLA Vikram Singh Negi said that the Vidhan Sabha bypoll was necessitated due to Bhandari’s leaving the Congress and joining the BJP. The people of Badrinath constituency had elected him their MLA for a period of five years but he did not complete his term. Negi said that the people of Badrinath constituency should teach the BJP a lesson in this bypoll. This will send a message across the State and create a new tradition which will be in the interests of Uttarakhand, he said.
