Ex-CM Harish Rawat & MLA Anupama Rawat had been protesting against alleged persecution of party workers
The protest by former chief minister Harish Rawat and Congress MLA Anupama Rawat at Bahadarabad police station ended after the authorities assured to look into their demand. The protesting leaders had a discussion with Haridwar district magistrate Vinay Shankar Pandey and senior superintendent of police Yogendra Singh Rawat on Saturday night, after which the protest was ended. The former CM said that they have given the administration time to drop the cases against party workers by November 10. He said that if the authorities take further action to pressurise the party workers, he too will take necessary action.
It will be recalled that the Haridwar Rural MLA Anupama Rawat had alleged that Congress party workers had been booked on trumped up charges by the police after the recently concluded Panchayat elections in Haridwar. During the Haridwar Panchayat elections, there was stone pelting on the police at the Bahadarabad vote counting centre during the counting of votes polled in the elections. Cases had been registered against many local Congress leaders and workers in the case. To oppose this, MLA Anupama Rawat sat on a dharna outside the Bahadarabad police station, alleging harassment of Congress workers and filing of false cases against them. She had been demanding withdrawal of cases lodged against the Congress workers allegedly under pressure from the BJP.
