A delegation of senior leaders of Congress party met the governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh at Lok Bhawan on Monday and expressed their strong objection on no action taken by the State government in the Haldwani incident in which the ground where the public meeting of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was allegedly purified by some BJP workers. Led by the chairman of the election management committee of Uttarakhand Congress, Pritam Singh, the delegation submitted a memorandum to the governor.
In the memorandum, the Congress leaders said that if any public place is declared ‘impure’ on the basis of a person’s caste and its alleged purification is done, then the issue is very serious and is the Constitution of India, social justice and the spirit of equality.
The leaders pointed out that despite assurances in the Rajya Sabha that the matter would be investigated, no action has been taken against the culprits so far. The party said the BJP government’s silence on the issue raises serious questions about social harmony and constitutional values.
The Congress leaders demanded that an impartial investigation should be conducted into the matter, the culprits should be identified and strict action should be taken under relevant sections of law. They also demanded any such acts spreading caste discrimination and social animosity should be strictly prohibited in future.
Pritam Singh said that Uttarakhand is the land of Gods and there should be no place for mentalities like untouchability and caste discrimination here. He said that Congress will continue to fight to protect the Constitution and social justice.
The chairman of the election management committee Harak Singh Rawat, State President, Jot Singh Gunsola, Shourveer Singh Sajwan, Nav Prabhat, MLAs Madan Bisht, Vikram Singh Negi, president of Mahila Congress Jyoti Rautela, treasurer Godavari Thapli, Garima Dasauni and others were part of the delegation.
