The former chief minister and Congress leader Harish Rawat courted arrest along with his supporters on Monday in Dehradun to protest against the Lakhimpur Khiri violence against farmers in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress party also held a vehement protest in different parts of the state against the Lakhimpur Khiri incident.

Rawat along with his several supporters arrived in the Dehradun SSP office about 12:30 PM and staged a protest against the violence against farmers. He said that son of a central minister has killed four farmers mercilessly when they were just protesting for their rights. “This is not just the murder of those farmers but it is the murder of our democracy and constitution too.

Our Congress ministers and leaders are not being allowed in the Lakhimpur Khiri area. Democracy, constitution and farmers’ protests are constantly being mocked by Modi government and the state governments led by him but the Congress will continue to fight against it,” stated Rawat. He was taken to Police Lines along with his supporters after being arrested and was released by the police in the evening.

The spokesperson of Congress Garima Dasauni also stated that farmers have been brutally murdered in UP and several congress leaders courted their arrest in various parts of the state on Monday in support of the farmers. The Leader of opposition Pritam Singh and his supporters also burned the effigy of the BJP government in Dehradun to show their anger towards the incident. Singh said that the farmers in Lakhimpur were massacred and this act by BJP is unforgivable. The state in-charge of the party Devendra Yadav led a protest and courted arrest in Rudrapur.

Besides the Congress party members, farmers also protested against the farmers’ murders in different parts of the state like Kashipur, Bajpur, Rudrapur, Dehradun and Doiwala. They protested against the central and UP government and demanded strict action against the murder of the four farmers.
