Congress questions govt over non-appointment of Lokayukt

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

The chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dasauni has said that the fact that the position of Lokayukt in Uttarakhand has been lying vacant since 2013 shows the intention of the State government. She said that Uttarakhand High Court has reprimanded the State government on the issue many times but the State government has done nothing.

“If the government had been serious about combating corruption, the Lokayukt would have been appointed years ago,’’ she said.

Dasauni claimed that the Congress party has always been in favour of a strong and independent Lokayukt.

Garima said that the Congress government led by Harish Rawat had taken an initiative on the issue but the file of Lokayukt was turned back from Raj Bhawan twice.

She said the BJP government should be asked as to why the appointment of the Lokayukt is constantly being delayed.

Dasauni said that numerous cases of recruitment scams, land scams, mining irregularities and other corruption have surfaced in Uttarakhand. She said that if an independent Lokayukt had been in existence, impartial investigations into these cases would have been possible. Dasauni said that it is unfortunate that crores of rupees are being spent every year in the name of the Lokayukt institution, but no appointments are being made. She demanded that the State government immediately appoint an independent Lokayukt.
