On the call given by the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC ) president Karan Mahara, the Congress leaders and workers staged a protest against the hike in the power tariffs and increase in the cooking gas cylinders in different parts of the state on Tuesday. In Dehradun, the workers of Mahanagar Congress led by Mahanagar president Javinder Singh Gogi gathered at the Astley hall where they held a protest meeting and burned the effigy of the State government. Speaking on the occasion Gogi said that the BJP government has already ignored important issues such as unemployment and price rise and now it has added to the burden on the people by increasing the power tariff. He said that it is surprising that the rivers of Uttarakhand produce a lot of power but instead of providing cheap power to the people of the State, the government is giving power at a very high cost.
He said that Uttarakhand is known as power producing state and here 25 hydropower projects including Tehri, Koteshwar and Maneri Bhali produce 2378 MW of power and 197 power projects with capacity of 21,213 MW are proposed and in such a situation the people of the state should get power at the rate of Rs 1.50 per unit. Similarly the farmers of the State should get free electricity. He demanded that fixed charges and meter charge should not be levied on consumers after two years of taking connection. The PCC vice president (organisation) Mathura Dutt Joshi, vice president Puran Singh Rawat, Garima Dasauni and others attended the protest.
