Congress supports slum dwellers, claims to approach HC against MCD

Congress leader and former MLA Rajkumar alleged that the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is only targeting the houses of poor people in the name of removing encroachments while nothing is being done against big commercial establishments constructed along the rivers in the city against the rules. He said that the Congress will go to the High Court against this decision. The MLA along with some slum dwellers staged a protest outside the office of the Dehradun municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar on Tuesday. Stating that they are also against encroachments he questioned how is it justified to demolish the homes of people who have been living on the riverbed of the Rispana river for decades. “What were the authorities doing when people constructed their homes there? Their children live there. Where will they take them and live? Why has no such notice been served to commercial establishments built near rivers across the city? Why are only the poor and underprivileged people being targeted? This thing happens every time just ahead of the election of civic bodies in the State. These poor people should not be used for petty politics,” Rajkumar said. He also said that Congress will not accept this injustice to the slum dwellers and will go to the High Court against the corporation’s decision to demolish encroachments.
