Groom en route to bride’s village on foot also joins protest
The leader of opposition in the Assembly, Yashpal Arya sat on an hour-long protest against the failure of the authorities to reopen the Haidakhan road on Tuesday. He said that despite 23 days having passed, necessary activity for construction of the road has not been undertaken by the authorities. The residents of various nearby villages are facing major inconvenience due to the delay in construction of the road but the authorities are not taking this issue seriously, he alleged. Arya said that there is talk of a temporary road being constructed but this is not providing any relief to the local villagers. Meanwhile, a marriage party also arrived at the site of protest on its way from Kotabagh to Pasauli village. The members of the marriage party were to cover a distance of about one kilometre on foot to reach their destination. On the way, the groom Rohit Bisht decked up for marriage also supported the protest and sat down with the leader of opposition to demonstrate in support of the demand for road construction. Shortly later, the marriage party walked about a kilometre to reach the village of the bride.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Kathgodam-Haidakhan road has been closed for 23 days now. According to the locals, more than 50,000 residents of 120 villages are facing major inconvenience due to this. Staging a protest on the affected part, Arya said that the construction of this road was undertaken during the term of the Congress government. It is the misfortune of the locals that the road has been closed for almost one month due to a landslide. He said that residents of 120 villages are facing problems related to health services and foodgrains. The vegetables and fruits to be sent to the market from the villages are rotting while the government is maintaining an apathetic stance. He said that the government has also failed in facilitating an alternate route. The Congress along with the villagers will undertake a movement if this road is not reopened at the earliest, warned the senior Congress leader. Local Congress leaders and villagers were also among those who participated in the protest demonstration.
