Congress welcomes SC verdict on electoral bonds

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has said that the electoral bond scheme was nothing but a scheme designed by the BJP government to fill the coffers of the party.

He said that the electoral bond scheme was tabled as a money bill in the parliament in the year 2017. At that time the Congress party had termed it as non-transparent and undemocratic. Mahara said that the scheme is an example of the corrupt practices of the BJP and the Congress party welcomes the decision of the Supreme Court which has termed it unconstitutional.

He claimed that the scheme was designed to provide benefit to the ruling party by which the BJP got 95 per cent of the donations. Mahara said that the scheme is a clear violation of the article 19(1) of the Indian constitution and in democracy there is no place for such schemes. The PCC president said that the BJP government continues to further the rhetoric of zero tolerance against corruption which is completely false and now the SC has exposed the BJP. He said that the Modi government kept the electoral bond scheme out of the purview of the Right to Information (RTI) which is unjustified. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had also warned that the scheme will become a medium of bringing black money in politics but the then finance minister paid no heed to his advice.

Mahara claimed that 95 per cent of total bonds of Rs 2,22 crore purchased in the year 2018 went to BJP. He said that the law ministry too was against the decision of electoral bonds. The PCC president said that the Congress party welcomes the decision of SC on electoral bonds and demands that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) should investigate the corruption in the scheme.
