Consumption of dry fruits rises, experts advise moderation

With the aim of tackling the effects of the cold during the winter season, individuals tend to increase their consumption of dry fruits. Many vendors of dry fruits have asserted that the demand for dry fruits surges during the winter season, consequently leading to an increase in prices. Experts have stressed the importance of consuming dry fruits in moderation during winter, as excessive intake can potentially result in adverse health effects. 

Dehradun’s dry fruit sellers have reported a consistent rise in sales of dry fruits during the winter season. Commenting on the demand, a dry fruit seller Jagu Bagga said that individuals strive to ward off the cold by consuming dry fruits more frequently during this period. There is a significant increase in the sale of dry fruits during winter, in contrast to the summer season. Almonds and walnuts are the preferred dry fruits among the residents of Dehradun, as they aid in combating the cold conditions, he added.

“As the winter season approaches, the demand for dry fruits tends to increase, subsequently affecting their prices. During winter, dry fruits are usually sold at higher prices compared to other seasons. However, it is important to note that the consumption of dry fruits also tends to rise by about 50 per cent during the winter season,” said dry fruit seller Vinod Kukreja.

Dietician Richa Kukreti told this correspondent that that the consumption of dry fruits typically increases during the winter. However, excessive consumption of dry fruits can lead to liver problems, constipation and pigmentation. “To avoid such ailments, individuals are advised to limit their intake of dry fruits during the winter season. It is also recommended to soak the dry fruits in a little bit of water before consumption. In addition, engaging in physical activities along with consumption of dry fruits and spreading the intake over one meal per day can also be beneficial,” Kukreti said.
